About Key West
Key West, a playground for pirates, wreckers, artists, writers and eccentrics, is a
city and a 2 x 4 mile island of the same name at the southernmost tip of the
Florida Keys in Monroe County, Florida, surrounded by waters of the Atlantic and
the Gulf of Mexico The city encompasses the northern part of Stock Island,
Sigsbee Park, Fleming Key and Sunset Key. Nearby Key Haven, the southern
park of Stock Island, Wisteria Island (Christmas Tree Island) are in
unincorporated Monroe County. Both Fleming Key and Sigsbee Park are part of
the Naval Air Station Key West and are not accessible to civilians. The Naval Air
Station Key West is an important year round training site for Naval Aviation due to
the superb weather conditions.
The central business district primarily comprises Duval Street and includes
much of the northwest corner of the island along Whitehead, Simonton, Front,
Greene, Caroline, Eaton Streets and Truman Avenue.
The official town motto is “One Human Family” and you will see this on bumper
stickers on the cars of locals when you visit. The Key West Business Guild
claims to be the nation’s first and oldest continuous gay and lesbian chamber of
commerce.
One of the biggest attractions on the island is a concrete replica of a buoy at the
corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point
in the contiguous 48 states. But in actuality, the property just west of the buoy on
the Truman Annex is the true southernmost point, but it is U.S. Navy land and
cannot be entered by civilian tourists.
If fishing, diving and sailing are for you the waters are amazingly beautiful. Or if
history, museums, art and architecture are your choice, Key West is filled with
rich history, beautiful old buildings and historic homes such as Ernest
Hemingway and John J. Audubon's, Harry S. Truman's Little White House or
Milton Curry s Mansion built in 1905. Tours by foot, bicycle or open air "conch
trains and trolleys" offer excellent monologues on the history, culture and
treasures of this old city incorporated in 1828.
