Middle Florida Keys Fishing - Marathon
Marathon, in the heart of the Florida Keys offers easy access to the Atlantic Ocean for blue
water offshore fishing and the Gulf of Mexico for backcountry fishing - tarpon, wreck and
permit fishing.
Off Marathon there is an elevation in the ocean floor from 1,000 feet to a peak of 480 feet
below sea level. This is called the "Marathon Key West Hump" and is a very popular
feeding ground for gamefish like blue and white marlin, mako shark, amberjack and
blackfin tuna. Private fishing charters frequent this spot for some of the best angler fishing
in the world.
Another thing that makes the Marathon area so unique for fishing is that the Gulfside in the
Middle Keys is deeper and more open than the surrounding Keys. This helps on those
days when it's too rough to fish on the oceanside. Six world record catches have been
made by anglers fishing with Marathon guides since 1991.
