John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

This park offers some of the best diving and
snorkeling in the Keys. Glass bottom boat, snorkel
and dive tours, visitor center, concession center, gift
shops, camping, canoeing/kayaking, fishing,
boardwalk, beach. The first undersea park in the
United States, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State
Park, and the adjacent Florida Keys National Marine
Sanctuary, cover approximately 178 nautical square
miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove
swamps. The park extends 3 miles into the Atlantic
Ocean and is approximately 25 miles in length.
These areas were established to protect and
preserve a portion of the only living coral reef in the
continental United States. Admission charged.
Pigeon Key
Said to be named for large flocks of White-crowned
pigeons (Columba leucocephala Linnaeus) which
once roosted here. During the building of the Florida
East Coast Railway Key West Extension, a major
construction depot was located here, the jumping off
point for construction of the Seven Mile Bridge. A
number of buildings from the Flagler era remain on
the island. Pigeon Key is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Pidgeon Key is located off old Seven Mile Bridge and
is accessible by foot or by shuttle service from the
Pigeon Key Visitor Center on Knight's Key.
Admission charged. Children free.
